Types of Trademarks
Learn about the different types of trademarks and which one is right for your brand.
Word Marks
A word mark protects the text of your brand name, slogan, or tagline regardless of how it's displayed. This is the broadest form of protection because it covers the word itself in any font, color, or style.
Examples:
GOOGLESTARBUCKSAMAZON
Design Marks (Logos)
Design marks protect logos, symbols, or stylized text. The protection is limited to the specific design elements, so changes to the design may require a new registration.
Examples:
Nike SwooshMcDonald's Golden ArchesTwitter Bird
Non-Traditional Marks
These include sounds, colors, scents, product packaging (trade dress), and three-dimensional shapes. They're harder to register but can provide powerful protection.
Examples:
NBC Chimes (sound)Tiffany Blue (color)Coca-Cola Bottle (shape)
